Before European settlers arrived, the area that is now Santa Monica was inhabited by the Tongva people, a Native American tribe that lived along the Southern California coast. They called the area “Kecheek” and used it for its natural resources, including fresh water from the now famous springs in what is now known as the city’s downtown area.
